Cruella de Vil’s origin story will soon come to life this May as Emma Stone takes on the role of the fashionable and err, cruel Cruella. Set in 1970s punk-era London, a young, wide-eyed (literally) Estella makes a living on the London streets with two young thieves while harbouring a desire to someday make a name for herself with her creative designs.

Her talents one day catch the eye of Emma Thompson’s Baroness von Hellman, the chic and Haute fashion legend of her time. With the foreboding name, the Baroness also serves as the movie’s primary antagonist, and no doubt will be responsible for setting up Estella to become the wicked Cruella.

The trailer doesn’t give away much by way of plot, aside from hinting that Estella will take down the fashion Alpha to complete her transformation to Cruella. Or Emma vs Emma, if you want to see it that way. The costume design looks the business though, and I think if anything, the movie will at least be a visual stunner; maybe a more posh version of Harley Quinn kind of thing.

Cruella will premiere in cinemas on 27 May and on Disney+ on 28 May via Premier Access ($38.98). If you can wait, the film will eventually be available to all Disney+ subscribers on 27 August for no additional cost. But your kids probably can’t.
