Apple has announced new graphics options for the Mac Pro, based on the Radeon Pro W6000 series GPU: the Radeon Pro W6800X MPX Module, Radeon Pro W6800X Duo MPX Module and the Radeon Pro W6900X MPX Module. They will be available as configurable options and standalone kits.
As such, the AMD Radeon Pro Vega II MPX Module and AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo MPX Module will no longer be configurable options. However, they will still be available as standalone kits to existing customers.
As the Mac Pro supports up to two MPX Modules, it’s possible to top out at 128MB of memory and 60 teraflops of computational performance if you spec a pair of 6800X Duos.
The new W6000-series MPX Modules will each feature four additional Thunderbolt 3 ports and an HDMI 2.0 port, with up to 12 Thunderbolt 3 ports possible on your Mac Pro. This is achieved through Infinity Fabric Link, a feature that allows up to four GPUs (two Duo modules) to connect at 84GB/s per link in each direction (168GB/s bi-directional bandwidth), which is about five times faster than the PCIe bus.
What we understand is that the performance improvement ranges from up to 23 per cent faster performance in DaVinci Resolve to up to 84 per cent faster performance in Octane X.
