Canon has just announced the new RF24mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM and RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lenses for the RF system.
They are perfect for the new R7 and R10 mirrorless cameras, and at the same time appease (slightly, at least) those who baying for more affordable lenses in the RF range.
With the new lenses, Canon now has 16mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm focal lengths for its affordable primes and 15mm to 400mm focal lengths for its telephoto zooms.
Joining the RF35mm f/1.8 IS STM is the equally compact RF24mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM, which is roughly 38mm when you use it on crop sensor cameras like the new EOS R7 or R10. Aside from its natural purpose as a street photography lens, it can double up as a macro lens thanks to its 14mm minimum focusing distance, greatly enhancing its versatility as an everyday lens for street shots or food photography.
The built-in Optical IS is capable of up to 5 stops and can go up to 6.5 stops when coupled with a compatible camera body with in-body image stabilisation (In-Body IS). It also has a silent Stepping Motor (STM) for videography.
Canon designed the RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM as a budget lens with a practical focal length range that covers 15-30mm or approximately 24-50mm (24-48mm, to be exact) on a crop sensor.
The in-built optical stabilisation offers up to 5.5 stops, and up to 7 stops with a compatible camera body with In-Body IS. For close-ups, the lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 12.8mm, achieving a magnification of up to 0.52x on the 15mm wide end with manual focus.
On a full-frame, you have both ultra-wide and wide-angle options while on a crop sensor you have both popular wide-angle focal distances. Much like the 24mm, the 15-30mm is a versatile option for people starting with an APS-C body with the intention of going full-frame. It’s also considerably lighter than the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM lens (approx. 390g vs approx. 840g), making it suitable for travel.
The RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is priced at $899 and goes on sale in September 2022 while the RF24mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM is priced at $969 and goes on sale in August 2022.
