The Nikon Z fc is the latest retro-themed mirrorless camera to hit the stores. The Z fc is a compact DX-format camera modelled after the Nikon FM2 and sports some of its iconic design elements, such as the “Nikon” engraving, the classic control dials and shutter buttons along with the circular eyepiece.
Just by the look alone you can surmise that this was designed with the street photographer in mind, and this borne out by the matching kit lenses: the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR in silver for the first time, and the special edition NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 SE, because looks, eh? But between the two, they cover most of the popular focal lengths for street photography.
An enthusiast’s camera, the Z fc has dedicated dials to control ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation, giving you full control at your fingertips. ISO sensitivity is rated for 51200 but can be pushed up to the equivalent of ISO 204800. However, there’s no in-body stabilisation.
The Z fc is also Nikon’s first camera in the Z range to support exposure compensation in Auto mode, much like how you can adjust brightness on your phone before shooting. It also has convenient features like Eye-Detection AF and Animal Eye- Detection AF (dogs and cats only) for both stills and video.
The Z fc can record up to 4K at 30 fps with no cropping. Nikon has made the camera more recording friendly, adding a host of features like AF-F (full-time AF), a 3” vari-angle touchscreen, and software support to use the camera as a webcam (Nikon Webcam Utility) and USB power delivery and charging to go along with it.
While the launch date has not been confirmed, we do know that six customisable trimmings – white, sand beige, amber brown, natural grey, coral pink and mint green – will be available.
